Question: When is the best time of year to focus on my estate planning?
Answer: My first answer would be, the moment you think about getting a will or trust, just pick up the phone. Simply call a lawyer for an appointment. Even if it is a weekend, holiday, or evening. Leave them a message for an appointment and they will get back to you.
Estate planning is one of those things that we all need, and starting the process seems to be the hardest part. Many folks needlessly will put off due to this. Doing it in the future, may not be an option – so take care of it now.
Generally, the summer months offer an additional opportunity. Many estate planning attorneys practice real estate law, as well. July and August are notoriously known to be slower months for real estate transactions. This gives the lawyer much more mental freedom and availability to work with you and your family on your estate planning needs.
With longer days and no school, summer also offers additional time to meet with your adult children. Some folks like to meet with the entire family, when crafting estate plans which protect against nursing home costs. Adult children are so often tied up with sport practices during the evenings of the school year. Summer is a great time to knock estate planning off your to do list.
