Did you know that Massachusetts residents over the age of 70 may opt out of jury duty? A 75 year old client recently got his jury duty summons in the mail. He was overwhelmed about balancing serving on a jury, while caring for his elderly wife.
Amazingly, the mailed summons offered no phone number or mailing address to inquire about jury duty obligations – just a website. My client has no internet access, so I was called into service.
On the website, I discovered the one may opt out of jury service, simply by being over the age of 70. Just be prepared to use the internet to make such an election.
The Mass.gov website lists 10 reasons you could be excused from jury duty.
