Question: My stepdaughter is 26 years old and getting married next year. I practically raised her (as her father), since she was a baby. Unfortunately, her mother passed away last year. Nobody should be without a parent of their wedding day. I’d like to adopt her before her wedding … is this possible?
Answer: Yes, it is! Adult adoptions happen often, through the Probate & Family Court. More good news: they are free of charge.
The form requirements for traditional adoptions are daunting. But adult adoptions require minimal forms, thanks to your stepdaughter’s consent. She will need to simply sign the forms together with you and provide some identification.
Assuming her birth father is not living, you can simply provide his death certificate along with your deceased wife’s.
If her birth father is living and on the birth certificate you may need to get his signed consent as well. At minimum, you will need to give him notice of the proceeding, giving him a chance to object.
If all goes, you can walk her down the isle as her father by springtime. Good luck!
